Building an Intelligent Streetlight Management System

There are about 160,000 streetlights in Taoyuan City, of which about 120,000 are traditional streetlights. In order to promote energy conservation and carbon reduction, improve energy efficiency, improve the maintenance efficiency of streetlights, and improve the quality of road lighting, Taoyuan City has conducted a complete replacement of traditional streetlights with smart and low energy-consuming LED streetlights, building a smart streetlight management system, and improving related cables and equipment together, which will reduce carbon emissions by about 75,000 metric tons and electricity bills of about NT$ 170 million each year. When the smart streetlight management system fails, automatic notifications are sent to the control center to facilitate maintenance arrangements, reduce labor costs for nighttime inspections and public failure reporting cases, and improve street light service quality and maintenance management efficiency.

The Human-Centered Intelligent Street Lighting System

Traditional street lighting uses fixed lighting design, which cannot automatically adjust to different weather conditions, leading to potential dangers. Taoyuan City has adopted variable lighting fixtures for road illumination. When the road is wet, it can automatically switch the brightness, effectively improving the uniformity of road illumination and reducing road surface reflection. It also enhances the recognition of road markings and signs, ensuring the safety of road users.

Installation of Dual Color Temperature Streetlight at intersections

To effectively enhance road safety and reduce the incidence of traffic accidents, Taoyuan City Government considered the theory of human visual perception and adjusted the original 3000K color temperature yellow light streetlight. The trial involves selecting several intersections and installing white light streetlight with a color temperature of 5000K. By utilizing the color deviation between different color temperature lights, we can improve drivers’ focus when approaching traffic lights at intersections and make it easier for pedestrians to be seen when crossing the road.
