Meaning and Value for Preservation of Xinwu Stone Weirs
Taoyuan Xinwu Stone Weirs are mainly distributed between the south of Yongan Fishing Port and Oyster Harbor, which are built by fisherman by piling up large pebbles in the intertidal zone. The fish will swim across the top of the wall at high tides and get trapped when the tide ebbs, and the fishermen can then use fishing net to catch trapped fish. The establishment of Taoyuan Xinwu’s stone weirs are presumed more than 300 years.
Preservation Promotion and Sustainable Development Plan
Since No. 2, 3 and 6 stone weirs in Kejian Village are in good condition, they are already listed as cultural landscape by Taoyuan City Government in 2019, and expanded the preservation region to No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 stone weirs in Kejian Village in 2022 according to law. The Xinwu Stone Weirs Preservation Promotion and Sustainable Development Plan now is promoting actively by commissioning Taoyuan Stone Tidal Weirs Association to repair the 9 stone weirs in the Xinwu Kejian Stone Weirs and strengthen the traditional techniques for preserving and restoring stone weirs. So far, we have achieved:
- International Symposium on Stone Weir, Xinwu was held in 2019, which invited experts from the United States, Japan and Taiwan to share experience.
- Held the “Stone weirs Experience GO!” activity in 2019.
- Restored the No. 6 stone weir in Kejian Village by elderly whom familiar with restoration techniques in 2019.
- Restored the No. 1 stone weir in Kejian Village by Taoyuan Stone Tidal Weirs Association in 2020.
- Held the “Xinwu Stone Weirs Fishing Fun” activity to inherit the fishing culture in 2020.
- Restored the No. 2 and 3 stone weirs in Kejian Village in 2020.
- Filmed “The Record of Xinwu Stone Weirs Restoration” in 2020.
- Officially opened Xinwu Stone Weirs Story House in 2021.
- Restored the No. 4 and 5 stone weirs in Kejian Village in 2021.
- Held the “Duty Stone Weirs Craftsman Youth Working Holiday” activity, and shot a commercial film in 2021.
- Shot a commercial film “All Star Sports Day Relaxing Tour-Let`s Go! The Chilling Trip Led by Seniors” with the All Star Sports Day in 2021.
- Certified ”Xinwu Stone Weirs” as a Environmental Education Facility and Field in 2022.
- Restored the No. 7, 8 and 9 stone weirs in Kejian Village in 2022.
- Announced “Taoyuan stone weirs repair skill” as cultural heritage preservation techniques , and Taoyuan Stone Tidal Weirs Association as the preservers in Taoyuan in 2022.
- Announced No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 stone weirs in Kejian Village as Taoyuan cultural landscape in 2022.
- Announced No. 7, 8 and 9 stone weirs in Kejian Village as Taoyuan cultural landscape in 2023.
